The State of GOP and other thoughts

E-mail Print PDF
I haven’t been available to blog much lately, but there are some things that I’ve been thinking about that I believe need to be said and discussed. Maybe in time, I’ll be able to opine the following points in more detail. Hopefully this thread can scratch the surface on various topics.
  1. The New York State GOP needs to elect a new chair. The State needs someone who can steer the Party to principles that combine the conservative and small government principles of Ronald Reagan, as well as maintaining a degree of progressive ideas that Teddy Roosevelt championed. The new chair should lead the party, from all branches of government, in a direction that distinguishes us from Democrats. I don’t know much about Chairman Mondello, but he may be part of the Party’s problem. He’s from a county that was once a GOP stronghold (Nassau) and is now in Democrat control. That means everything Republicans have been doing in that county has been wrong. To have a State Chair from that county is simply ridiculous.
  2. Senator Dean Skelos sounded somewhat promising when I read a bio on him in the paper. Since he’s been leader, he has not impressed me. He’s also from Nassau County, which means he is the wrong choice to lead the Senate Republicans. I read today that he’s dangling money to Democrats to switch their party affiliation just to put the GOP back in control. If control means more of the same from the GOP Senate, the Democrats should wisely reject his offer. We need a leader who wants to put the party in a new direction, not prolong the agony of a dying breed of Republicans.
  3. I don't believe Rudy Giuliani would be the best gubernatorial candidate for the GOP. As mayor, the City Charter allowed him to certain control over how New York City got run. As Governor, he’ll be a fish out of water, frustrated by having to defer to the Senate and Assembly leaders. He hardly has a record in building the Republican party. If he became governor, he’d be the strongest Republican in the State. He would have to prove to me that not only would he lead as the State's Chief Executive, but prove he can be an influence in rebuilding the State Party. I haven't seen it yet.
  4. Who cares if Senator Clinton accepts the Secretary of State position? Even if Governor Patterson appoints a Jerry Nadler to the US Senate, the GOP will find a way to lose in an election. Like selecting George Pataki as the Senate candidate.
  5. Where the heck is Rick Lazio? Once a promising candidate in the NY GOP, now he has vanished.
  6. Do I think President Bush has hurt the Republican Party? Yes. He was a reincarnated Lyndon Johnson. Think about it. Johnson got the JFK tax cuts implemented, which spawned increased economic growth. Johnson expanded government beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Johnson was a military hawk fighting a war that fell out of favor with the American People. I guess you can say that President Bush is lucky when he changed his military strategy. God forbid if that Rumsfeld character was left in charge of our War Department.
  7. Will the GOP be stupid enough to Wilson-Pakula Mayor Bloomberg in 2009? I hope not. Three of the five County chairs need to throw their support to him. I’m a big boy and I don’t need Daddy Warbucks tell me to cut salt out of my diet, avoid transfats, ride my bike everywhere (even though he hasn’t asked the Police to enforce BIKE LAWS!!!), I should be for congestion pricing and his Westside stadium and tolls on East River bridges. Yeah, man, you know it all.

I’ll stop here, because I’m sure I’ve given UE folks enough to discuss.

Daniel

I absolutely agree there needs to be a new leader at the state level but I also think many of the leaders in various counties need to be asked to gracefully exit. Far too many had counties had disappointing showings in not only election outcomes but fundraising and outreach.

As for the fear of Rudy being a negative impact on the growth of the base I'm not sure that fear is truely worth fretting over. I think we have learned our lesson with how Pataki's leadership almost destroyed the party.

Frankly I don't think any elected official should ever be considered the defacto leader or actual leader of the party at any level because the goals of the politician may not be, and often are different, than those of political party. Basically a politician, more often than not, is focused on election or re-election of himself at any cost. The leader of the party must have a broader desire than just winning elections. If we didn't learn this lesson with out previous republican governor then we never will.

Mondello/Skelos should go. I'm not sure that's because they failed as Nassau County GOP representatives or because they are riding a dead shark, but either way change needs to start at the top.

I disagree RE: Rudy for Governor. I actually think it was harder for him to be Mayor with one radically liberal body in NYC than it would be to manage two in Albany. He's the right guy for the job now especially because Albany needs to cut spending and make our tax system more competetive for attracting businesses back to New York State. His solid record in NYC on these matters is well known - increasing City Spending only 8% above the rate of inflation over his two terms (As a comparison, Bloomberg has raised spending almost 30% above the rate of inflation in just his first 7 years).

Also, Rudy is not alligned with the GOP's ruling class in Albany - many of whom still have resentment towards him from his days disliking Pataki. The people he could bring in to help lead the party in Albany would be a welcome site for those, like yourself, who want to see the GOP get back to its small government/low tax prinicples.

I think it's just as likely that Patterson appoints himself to the Senate as anyone else. But if he doesn't put himself in the spot opened by Hillary's departure, he will pick someone from a more valuable spot in the State - meaning that he will pick someone who's local apparatus offers him something of value in votes for future power increases in Albany.

Lazio? Don't worry about him. He won't be back. Bush? He's thrown our party back so much that it may take a few election cycles to recover - especially considering the radicall spending ways of the GOP Congress that he worked with.

Lastly, Bloomberg will NOT get the GOP line for 2009 for Mayor. He might get the GOP line for Governor in 2010, but that's too far away to even consider too much at this point...

I agree with your last statement CH. The party should be run by someone who is NOT an elected official. Yet, Sandy Treadwell was not an elected official yet he was the lead force ruining the party while Pataki was Governor.

So you'd have to make a rule excluding the brainless pawns of elected officials as well...

Well Jay

Obviously it should be someone who can actually lead. The problem is how is that leadership best demostrated before we select them to be chair? My guess would be previously leading a county political party.

However I will never again support a county chairman who hsa the intention of seeking public office.

I'm not sure that the origin of the person who leads the party matters. The ideal "party leader" would be someone who is good at organization, can get others to follow readily and can raise alot of money and, most importantly, is doing so for the better of the party/the issues.

The latter is not often true and, in the real world, none of us should expect that to happen very often. We all do things for personal advancement in one form or another.

The next Republican leaders should recognize that by empowering, encouraging and, most importantly, funding grassroots GOP development, they will both help the political cause the party is based on AND will improve their opportunities for personal advancement. Win-win...

New Yorkers just don't care about small government. One in four New Yorker voters are surviving directly as civil servants or government contractors, and will always vote to expand the government and increase benefits.

Another large population are also just reflexive Democratic voters.

The there's the 10% living off the public teat through government aid programs.

There's no magic "leader" who can change New Yorkers into Republicans. Republicans are moving out in droves, replaced by immigrants (who become Democrats) and young urban hipsters (Democrats).

It's over. New York won't see a Republican ANYTHING again until it goes bankrupt in 5-10 years. Necessity will bring Republicanism back, when New York hits rock bottom.

"Necessity will bring Republicanism back, when New York hits rock bottom."

I agree with that line, yet i don't think we should just wait around until that happens. There's much that can be advocated IN ADVANCE of the State's decline into the large government abyss. The same is true nationally.

The GOP, by losing all power, gets the advantage of being able to be idealistic without losing anything at all. Before, conservative idealism would have cost the GOP the State Senate. Now that appears not to be a concern.

This is also true for the minority communities - especially in NYC. The GOP can gain support, over time, if an effort is made to reinforce that national Democrats don't care much about NYC and urban America. They talk a good game, but don't deliver.

If Republicans get out in the New York City communities with that message, as it becomes a reality, there will be a chance to get thier support.

As well, issues like school choice and job creation will be high on the list for many NYC voters.

Therefore, although i agree with your assessment in a way, there's much for the GOP to be working on right now...

Are these guys kidding...

"Two city council members have taken a page from The Post, urging Citigroup honchos to show their gratitude for a billion-dollar federal bailout by renaming the new Mets ballpark Citi/Taxpayer Field.

The struggling bank - which landed a $351 billion handout - is slated to pay $400 million over the next 20 years to name the Queens stadium Citi Field.

A Page Six cartoon by Sean Delonas mocked the irony in yesterday's Post by depicting the ballpark being renamed "Taxpayer Bailout Field."

The two city politicians, Staten Island Republicans Vincent Ignizio and James Oddo, obviously agree."

If Oddo and Ignizio are successful in drawing greater public outcry against Citigroup, they will just decide they can't afford to sponsor the field - costing the new stadium and one of our home teams $400 million dollars.

This is what's wrong with the GOP - misplaced principles.

The investment of Citigroup into one of outerborough-NYC's largest economic engines - The Mets - is bothering these guys because they are getting a "bailout." Where was their outrage at the last few budgets passed by the body they are a member of??? why didn't they try to get as much attention against wasting billions of dollars on unnecessary programs???

These morons are grandstanding on an issue that BENEFITS the city of New York!! Years of passive acceptance of a city budget that's grown by more than 30% above the rate of inflation - more than $20 billion over that period.

"Gratitude??" That's what they want for "taxpayers???"

You really can't make this stuff up...

Michael Steele penned this piece that was posted on Politico.com. I like what he said about broadening the coalition and building GOP organizations in ALL states, not just the win-able ones.

Yet, he's been near the leadership and, essentially, part of the inside crowd for a long time and i've not seen him say these things before...

Clearly, my sentiments on Nassau County GOP are spot on. I am embarrassed to be associated with a political party that behaves this way.

If this is how our party wants to behave, then I might have to consider alternative political avenues.

RE: AG Andrew Cuomo expected to run for governor in 2010, the jockeying for his current post.....

I am encouraged that Staten Island District Attorney - Daniel M. Donovan Jr, is seriously thinking of running on the Statewide Ticket in 2010 as New York State Attorney General!

I have personally worked with Danny while I was with the NYPD/FBI Organized Crime Investigation Division regarding a major case which involved three years of work. He was focused and got the job done!

Slowly and surly the 2010 ticket is coming together.

18% approval rating this Governor is on the way to be appointed as Ambassador to some unknown Country, which is this Gov's Honorable way out of this mess....NYC Base Dem's will not let Paterson run again....Into the ring comes Cuomo.

(Right after summer) NY-GOP needs more players to step up to the plate. This unlike other election years the NY-GOP needs leaders as the Party has become irrelevant in the State.

It is Do or Die time for the NY-GOP or they are through as a Party in NY State.

All candidates best know problems in ALL parts of NY State and terms used in the different parts of the State...AKA....Blue Line - North Country - South Shore - Twin Cities & Names of ALL Counties including the Indian names along with the resevation problems. Budget #'s.

Keep distance from the Dem Lobbist known by the name of Alfonse D'Amato & Joe Bruno and their uemployed (Never held real jobs) political hacks who lost the NY State Senate & made NY-GOP to what you see of it today.

Rudy is NOT running for anything.

Rudy is running for governor, gang. We can stop with the endless speculation about who will be the nominee if Rudy doesn't run. Rudy IS running. He will be the nominee.

Donovan would be an excellent candidate for AG. I think he could clean Cuomo's clock (assuming Cuomo is smart and runs for reelection).

Cuomo can beat Patterson in a primary, but he will alienate a large part of the democratic party base - again - in the process. That will make his chances of winning in November impossible.

Do Cuomo's prospects change if Patterson steps aside? Perhaps, but why would he do that? What job could he be offered that would make him just step down and hand the nomination to Cuomo? I don't think there is anything that good.

Cuomo shouldn't leave his present job as it's the first time anyone thinks he's doing well. At his age and with his history of campaign failure, he's better suited to stay as AG.

Yet, knowing the Democratic Party, they'll run him anyway.

In my view, Cuomo running by making Patterson step down - which he will have to do both internally and externally - will only keep the minority vote home on Election Day. As a Republican, I hope he runs because that would enable a much more clear path for our next Governor, Rudy Giuliani.

Patterson would need to step down tomorrow and do so for, as Irish is saying, some positive reason, like an appointment. The longer he's there, the harder it gets to excuse his departure for anything but his poor poll numbers.

My view is that Patterson refuses to leave (as it would be the end of his electoral political career) because Daddy Dearest will not allow him to ruin his lobbying business in that fashion. Basil will force his son to stay in office and run for another term - forcing, if Cuomo decides to run, a brutal and dragged out primary, pitting organized labor/gay activists/minority vote against Cuomo's moderate demeanor.

All this is really good news for the GOP...

New York Republicans have lost the State Senate because of the lack of courage to act as Republicans....That vote as Liberals on the State budgets & on all social Issues ...(Selling out on their base)

In recent years NY GOP Republican Senate turned their backs on Conservatism on a host of issues such as ALL Tax & Spend Polices; 2nd Amendment rights; Pro-Life people; And voted for crazy bills such as SONDARA;

NY GOP did so just to try to protect the seats of one or two of their State Senators like Nick Spano in Westchester, (Who mind you lost his seat anyway)....

If ANY NY GOP State Senator winds up voting for this bill ...
Then the current GOP Senate Leaders have lead their GOP Party back to the same "Slaughter House" that Joe Bruno took to them in the past!

NY-GOP will surly lose the State Senate for life if this bill passes!
NY-GOP has "Tunnel Vision"....Meaning No common sense on the voters pulse that they represent.

Open Congressioal Seat for 23rd...

WARNING! – TO NY-GOP, another seat will open up soon and you can lose it again…....

If the NY-GOP picks State Assemblywoman Deirdre Scozzafava (As small buzz is being made) to replace the Congressman…Then this will mean ANOTHER DEFEAT FOR THE GOP!

Assembly members voted 89 to 52 in favor of the bill (A7732).....
Five Sellout Republicans vote and pushed for Gay Marriage…..
(Joel Miller, Janet Duprey, Teresa Sayward, Dierdre Scozzafava, and Fred Thiele).......

Dierdre Scozzafava is a Republican who voted for this bill…...
(Along with four “I stand for nothing” NY-GOP politicians who did not have to vote for this bill coming from areas they represented)

If I was a Dem Consultant – Here is how I would win this congressional race….

I would run a Blue Collar/DINO/Conservative Democrat against a made out to be RINO/Liberal Republican Dierdre Scozzafava …...Conservatives will sit home and the Dem’s will win again.

GOP should not go down this road! Don’t even think about it!

the concept of "acting as Republicans" may be misplaced with this particular issue, Irish. I don't see gay marriage opposition as what should be a "Republican issue."

These types of issues have been "Republican" in the past and have been, in total, electoral losers in NY State and city.

It would be much better to let the pastors on both sides of the aisle fight this one out and have the GOP focus on fiscal issues first and foremost. This is especially true at a time in America's history where "the economy" is clearly the biggest issue next to homeland security.

In the end, the abandonment of the fiscal conservative issue on spending and taxation was what cost the GOP control of the Senate and the Governor's mansion. The losses had NOTHING to do with gay marriage or support for abortion rights.

If you really want to help bring back "conservatism," Irish, lay off of the essentially non-partisan issues of gay marriage and abortion. Making votes on these tangential and relatively unimportant issues a litmus test of "conservatism" is wrong and hurtful to re-building the Republican Party...

(First off, my deepest condolences to Chris Collins of the passing of his father)

On the matter of Chairman Cox making his selection on who should run for Governor, fine and that is his right to do so. Although - Many clearly would let this play out just a little while longer for morale of the GOP grass roots & troops within the party.

Chairman Cox should remember - Former GOP Chairman Mondello made a pick in the 23rd Congressional race a few months ago which turned into disaster for the NY-GOP. In fact, in doing so the NY-GOP proved again that it can be a disaster to it's self while at the same time making a joke of the National GOP level.

Further, it is NEVER good for the NY-GOP & it's current leadership to have a full time lobbyist who has backed Dem's in the past, give advice to a statewide GOP Candidate such as Congressman Rick Lazio to leave a race. (If....in fact the GOP had Al D do this)

Think about it, Al D'Amato giving advice (On behalf of GOP?) to a running statewide candidate? Clearly the NY-GOP and Conservative educated base wants nothing to do with the NY-GOP of the past and those who help bring her down in this state.

While Erie County Executive Chris Collins is an all around good guy with a proven track record in Erie County - His pick of "Consultants" speak volumes about his current campaign and the team he picked to surround him. The campaign has yet to bring Chris out to meet many of the leaders of the party, thus many are starting to fall in line with Lazio. (Many endorsements thus far).

Rick is advising all on his Facebook of his current travels which are non stop across that state. In short, Lazio is working the State and receiving press and Collins is not. Still time for Collins to get his word out, Yes. For the State Chairman to make a decision on selection , I say respectfully No, at least for the benefit of the Party faithful.

I am NOT taking sides of either candidate right now. BUT to clearly close down the "open system" while candidates are working to obtain support of the grass roots level is wrong. It can become another disaster like that of the NY-GOP's recent 23rd CD race in the North Country.

BTW, much focus to remain on the State Senate seats or the NY-GOP goes the way of Massachusetts, that is one party rule and NY becomes an official banana republic.

Cuomo 16 million, Patterson 3 million on hand. – Exactly the numbers all sources where predicting.

When does Patterson get thrown over board???

HERES HOW, Levy enters this race which gives Cuomo an into the Dem primary. Levy then leaves Gov race taking the AG spot or an I.O.U..
(C then beats P)

Cuomo dose not need another Carl McCall problem. Cuomo dose not and the Dem’s do not need a split at their state convention. Obama asked Patterson to get out but he won’t. Too much Governor “swag” is at hand for Governor position to give up the spot. Sources say Patterson is staying in for this fight.

So goes the theory of Levy getting into this race to give Cuomo a reason to jump into a primary. (Cuomo gives…He can do it so I can do it also answer…good for the party to have a primary etc…)

IF…Levy dose not get into this race (Which he will) – Dem’s can self implode with NYC Dem’s pulling for Patterson which is the weighed vote at the convention, those are the votes that Cuomo needs to become Governor.

Meanwhile, Lazio just keeps on strutting his stop spending, tax cutting pledge and points fingers to the most dysfunctional state government in America…Albany.

I truly believe that with a NYC Cuomo vs Patterson fight brewing in NYC & no love for the Albany dysfunction crowd – That suburbanites and rural voters can decided this year’s statewide elections here in New York.

That is to say….IF….conditions remain the same as today and Levy NOT in the race. Imagine candidates running around above the Westchester County lines.

If this is the case, expect Lazio to live full time in Long Island, Westchester and milking cows upstate…(milking cows was pun)...I live in the Adirondacks so Lazio will be riding snowmobiles and be using a chainsaw.

P.s.....I think a pointed story of the same words more or less is out there, but clearly someone else has to enter this race (Who ever that is) to have Cuomo enter.

I still think the "union heads" get Obama to make Patterson Ambassdor to some country or a great I.O.U. in the private secotr, giving him an honorable way out.
