After reading a few business and economic articles in Crains NY today, I stumbled onto this story...
Could that story's foundation be true?
"In most of the United States, 24 abortions are carried out for every 100 live births. In New York, 72 abortions occur for every 100 live births."
72 abortions for every 100 live births????
At what point does making common use of a surgical procedure to end an unwanted pregnancy and, ultimately, as a common form of contraception, start to negatively affect NYC's culture as a whole?
"...an average of 250 abortions a day...???"
The report being cited was written by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, which is claimed to be a Planned Parenthood related organization. This leads me to believe the statistics are accurate - or certainly not slanted for a "conservative" purpose.
This issue is one that suits the present GOP base and the State GOP should be looking to make this an issue in the years to come if these trends don't subside.
Regardless of it's political applications, the fact that 7 abortions take place for every 10 live births in NYC makes even a pro-choice Republican like myself sick and should be a call to action for many community leaders in NYC. If this trend continues, the GOP may be able to turn around an issue that has not worked in it's favor in NY for decades...

" “Any time you see these high rates of abortion, it is a sign of high rates of women having unprotected sex,” he says."
I would change this statement to ...women having sex, not necessarily "unprotected" and even if so the article does not provide evidence of same.
The writer points out that condoms are provided free and at will especially in NYC, but the abortion rate remains much higher than the national average. This tells me the distribution of condom program isn't working.
The powers that be should entertain abstinence programs as an alternative since there is evidence of success in bringing abortion rates down.
As to better access to other contraceptives, there has been evidence that hormonal drugs have harmful risks, risks that are not always reported or not taken seriously.

Jay, you sound like a hardcore true blue conservative. What happened to the old Jay who firmly represented the libertarian wing of the republican party? :-)

Doesn't the baby have a choice? Every time you "choose" to have sex, especially unsafe sex, there is the possibility of a pregnancy resulting. Tell John Edwards that the expression "child bearing years" means exactly that. The Republican party is the party of life - the Democratic party is the Party of Death and Infanticide. New York State rejected - rejected funds for teaching abstinence under one Governor Spitzer and we can imagine why. His promiscuous life style goes with his disrespect for the value of life.

Health Department under Thomas Frieden and of course, Mayor Bloomberg, to teach abstinence and self-respect. They are too busy going after store owners who keep their doors open while the air conditioning is running or sending in the transfat police into Dunkin Donuts. Oh, and the city council wants to restrict the number of fast food restaurants in poorer neighborhoods. Note to city council: "fast food" means exactly that and sometimes it is all that people can afford. Not to mention the fact that the same chains offer salads.
