In three weeks the campaign for the presidency of the United States shall come to an abrupt end and Americans shall elect a President who will serve for 4 years….all in accordance with our beloved Constitution. Reading the polls over the last 5 days it is clear that Barak Obama is in close striking distance of capturing the Presidency.
As in all of our elections, save one, the American people, notwithstanding the vitriol, calumny and invective directed against each of the candidates, shall accept the event with equanimity and move on to their own business at hand. On January 20, 2009, after his inauguration, President Obama will also address his business at hand, the Presidency of the United States. The question is what can we expect.
If there is one thing upon which all of us can rely about the character of Barak Obama is that throughout his career he evidenced no compunction in leaving the dance without the person who “brung” him. His friends at Columbia and Harvard Law School, gone. The radical Marxists that moved him through the political can of worms called Chicago politics, gone. His close religious affiliations, gone. And without doubt the cast of characters who brought him the success that he will soon enjoy, Move-on.org, Daily Kos, Soros, Acorn, etc. all the far left supporters who threw money and human recourses into his campaign will also be gone.
The Obama Presidency will be defined by Barak Obama’s voracious ambition… to be a president the likes of which will be compared with Washington, Lincoln and in his interpretation of history, Franklin Roosevelt. And in order for that to happen a cataclysmic event or set of events must occur. Obama shall not hesitate.
Notwithstanding that the Congress which will be waiting for him will contain far more Democrats than Republicans than at any time in our history representing a balance of power similar to that which existed after the Civil War when the victorious Republican Party ruled unopposed for almost 25 years, the Congressional Democrats, as have all of Obama’s former friends and supporters, will be very disappointed.
Yes, a few bones will be thrown at the snarling dogs: The Free Choice Act, excessive regulation of our financial structure, perhaps a stab at universal health care. However much else will be resisted. And where Obama will attempt to shine, free from the Constitutional restraints of the Legislature, will be in international relations and national security. Obama will not need to create the events, they will already be presented to him by the national security agencies and the Pentagon on a silver platter. Obama shall not hesitate.
Therefore, the Obama Presidency will characterized by a strident America prepared to use a blunt instrument should its will be ignored. Democrats will be shocked into silence, Republicans will be brought on board. The Chinese and Russians will quickly learn a fact of American history: Conservatives maintain the peace, progressives search for war. Obama shall not hesitate.
