What a day it was and what a time it will be!  John McCain, the embattled presidential presumptive nominee of the Republican Party pulled the rabbit out of the hat with his choice of Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as Vice President.  Americans in general and Republicans in particular viewed with awe a young American woman: a governor, a mother of five children, married over 20 years to her childhood sweetheart, a social, political and economic conservative.  Now, if the choice is between Barak Obama and John McCain, the American people have an opportunity to make that choice with the confidence of knowing that it is a real one.  And heaven knows as a nation, faced with at least two military challenges, numerous economic challenges both at home and abroad and political challenges involving how to establish new laws and new strategies for our continued domestic tranquility and the war against terror, we are ready to make that choice.

Oh yes, what a time it will be.  And Sarah Palin is just the right vice presidential nominee to place in clear relief the choices that are before us.  She brings to the discussion the common sense experience of an elected administrator that is essential to persuade the American people that soaring rhetoric is only as good as the strategies proposed.

Immediately upon learning of her selection by John McCain the Left pushed aside those pressing issues of health care, the continued presence of our troops in Iraq, immigration reform, the looming recession and grabbed with delight the issue of abortion, identifying Sarah Palin as a pro-life candidate from the extreme fringe of American politics.  Time and again Democrats of Demagoguery have used the “pro-life” label to scare Americans into believing that if a candidate is pro-life Rowe v. Wade will be overturned and backroom abortions will return.  It has worked for decades with the educated elite of the Upper Westside of New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and the college campuses throughout the country.  And the underlining argument of the Democrats of Demagoguery is that to be pro-life you must a religious fanatic.

Well, let’s get it all on the table.  Anyone who believes that a fertilized human cell, and I mean a cell, is not human is ignorant of the scientific basis of human genetics.  Human life, from a scientific point of view, not a religious point of view mind you, begins at conception.  In this context I advise my readers that I am pro-choice, notwithstanding.

How I have gotten there I will reserve for another day.  But when this “scientific” argument is presented to the Left invariably, as do all demagogues faced with the error of their argument, either start yelling incoherent palaver, sometimes insulting, or head for the door.  I have lived on the Upper Westside for many years and though my experience is anecdotal, speaking with literally hundreds of pro-choice progressives, I can tell you, without exception, those are the only two responses.

The introduction of Governor Sarah Palin into this particular political issue may finally put to bed the Left’s reliance on the issue of abortion as a means to get Americans to vote Democrat.  Being a woman Sarah Palin removes the red herring that this is a woman’s issue and men should stand back and shut up.  If anything, the discussion will get the American people to begin to understand that the Democratic Party’s attempt to have them decide to vote for a candidate for President or Vice President of the United States based on the issue of abortion  alone, is clear and unadulterated demagoguery.  Personally I can’t wait for the debate between Sarah Palin a pro-life Protestant and Joe Biden a pro-choice Catholic.  Bring it on.

"Now, if the choice is between Barak Obama and John McCain, the American people have an opportunity to make that choice with the confidence of knowing that it is a real one."

I hope Palin can hold up to that claim, Roger. Every day it seems less clear that, using your analogy, McCain had such good judgement in selecting her.

Does it get worse or does it get better?

This is the dilemma of making a "bold" pick and i'm pretty sure few in the political world have any real idea...

Alibaba, you are more than correct (if that's possible), and I thought the very same thing ... if the so-called liberated women of the American Left cannot stand Governor Palin, then someone truly earned their cookie in the McCain Nomination Wing of his campaign headquarters.

I am of the mind that in an historic election like this, with all the remarkable things that have come and gone since Senator Obama joined the fray, knowing that an African-American Presidential candidate (a liberal one) would almost certainly unleash a media furor unlike this country has ever seen, I like the idea of a "bold" pick for McCain's running mate. Sarah Palin is just that.

gone off the deep end in his attacks on Gov. Palin and yes, even her youngest baby. I have emailed him about this and apparently got under his skin because he answered me. I hope his tenure at the Atlantic is a short one since he ruined The New Republic. The other loon is Alan Colmes who now thinks he is an obstetrician! I could not make this up. People should phone Fox and demand that he be fired. I always thought he was dumb but never thought he was evil. Now I do. When you attack a mother and her baby . . . these people are afraid of Governor Palin because she is not "their kind of woman". She is married with more than one child, hunts, fishes and runs a very important state. Maureen Dowd can look down her nose on "small town America" but we vote! (And I originally came from a small town myself.) Obama can go hunting for "arugula" in Alaska as we cling to "guns and God" as he put it in San Francisco!
