Every year, the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston presents "Profile in Courage Awards" to notable individuals. The award is named after the Pulitizer Prize-winning book, "Profiles in Courage" (1955) by Prof. Arthur Schlesinger then-U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy.
Caroline Kennedy plays a key role in selecting the recipients and often presents them with the award at a formal ceremony. Here is a list of recipients since 1990. Not surprisingly, most of the recipients reflect the Kennedys' own left-wing and elitist views. A few of them, such as Connecticut Governor Lowell Weicker, are really hilarious.

We've all heard about the fall of Bernard Madoff, who is believed to have squandered $50 billion in a "giant Ponzi scheme." What has gotten less attention, however, is Madoff's extensive campaign contributions to many Democrats over the years.
Let us ask. First, should politicians and political groups who received contributions from Madoff hand them over to the authorities with the aim that some of it might be returned to investors whose money he squandered? It's become common practice to return campaign contributions from unsavory individuals.

Queens Councilman and State Senator-Elect Hiram Monserrate, a Democrat, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with a beer bottle.
Under state law, if any current member of the legislature is convicted of a felony, they are automatically expelled from office. My guess is that the State Senate will allow him to take his seat and let the legal process take its course.

In a recent post, you wrote that you had a meeting with Jay Savino and won his support for setting up a Young Republican club in the Bronx. You mentioned that he told you what he's gone through in the past few years (no doubt in reference to the Internet smear campaign and the death threats).
There is someone out there, a former acquaintance of Jay's, who has a bitter grudge against him. In 2006, this person set up numerous blogs attacking Jay and his supporters. Using countless screen names, he posted numerous attacks on the old UE site and other sites, including Room 8.
This person, who likes to hide behind the Internet's anonyminity, also likes to viciously attack anyone who supports Jay and threatens to have them investigated by the authorities. By doing this, he thinks he can discourage anyone from supporting the Bronx GOP.

Now that the Democrats have finally won control of the State Senate (and assuming they maintain control in 2010 which seems likely), they will now have the power to redraw district boundaries to comply with the forthcoming 2010 Census as they see fit.
In Brooklyn, they will probably chop up Republican Senator Martin Golden's seat. For State Senator Andrew Lanza on Staten Island, they could add parts of Manhattan (which lies north of the borough), Brooklyn, and Queens. (District boundaries can legally cross county lines as witnessed by the 33rd and 34th districts, which have parts of the Bronx and Westchester in their boundaries. The 40th district, which is currently held by Republican Sen. Vincent Leibell, crosses Putnam, Westchester, and Dutchess counties.) If Queens Sen. Padavan survives the recount and manages to win re-election in 2010, Democrats will no doubt carve up his district. Throughout the state, they can redraw boundaries to maximize their gains and weaken the remaining Republican officeholders.

The race between longtime Republican State Senator Frank Padavan and Democratic Councilman James Gennaro remains unresolved. A week ago, the New York Times reported that Padavan was leading by about 502 votes with 8,000 absentee ballots that needed to be counted.
Now Democrats are accusing Republicans of racism, alleging that they are trying to disqualify votes from minority districts.

Does anyone care to offer any predictions on what will happen on Tuesday?
1) Who will win the election, McCain or Obama? What will the popular vote percentages be? Will what will the votes be in the Electoral College? Who will finish third in the popular vote? Ralph Nader or Bob Barr? Do you think one candidate will win the popular vote but lose in the Electoral College? Could the race end in a 269-269 tie and be sent to the House?

The chances of the Democrats recapturing the congressional seat on Staten Island for the first time since 1980 have now increased. Former Comgressman and Borough President Guy Molinari is backing Tim Cochrane, the Conservative Party candidate, over Republican former Assemblyman Robert Straniere. In 2004, Straniere, who had long fallen out of favor with the rest of the party, lost the Republican primary to Vincent Iginizo.
