I’ve written before about the pernicious effects of public employee labor union control of our state legislature. Bought by the unions, the majority of the legislature votes massive public pension increases and benefits for union employees well above those enjoyed in other states. That causes most the state’s serious financial troubles, and makes N.Y. less competitive than other states in creating private sector jobs and businesses. A website that details the pernicious influence of labor unions in N.Y. state government is at http://www.albanyinc.com
Governor Patterson’s effort to cut bloated government spending in the health care sector is being fought by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the Greater N.Y. Hospital Association. If there’s anything wrong with the governor’s proposal, it’s that it doesn’t go far enough in cutting waste, fraud, and abuse in the N.Y. state Medicaid program, which the N.Y. Times estimated at up to 40% of the entire program. In dollars, 40% is more than $12 billion per year, enough to close the estimated budget gap easily. The governor proposed a $600 million cut, which now has shrunk to a reported $200 million. At this rate, he’ll be increasing Medicaid waste, fraud, and abuse before this special session is over.

With such difficulty being had in trying to reduce the budget for this year, how can we possibly expect Albany lawmakers to close a $5.4 Billion projected deficit next year?
