They have Returned to NYC Streets!

Mayor Bloomberg’s approval ratings are high and there’s talk of him leaving City Hall for Albany. He’ll, of course, say his record speaks for itself and that he’ll be the best person to run this state.

But does his record really portray a better New York than eight years ago? Has he really been the best thing since Rocky Road ice cream?

Folks driving in New York are starting to see a change and it’s not for the better. Up until the start of the Giuliani administration, every bridge and tunnel had its squeegy men using dirty water to wash your car windshields. The “Quality of Life” program began and in a matter of months, no more squeegy men.

Today, they are back. What has our mayor done or not done to allow these folks to return? When Giuliani arrested the squeegy men, many were found to have criminal records. Just by removing them from the streets, crime dropped considerably. Mayor Bloomberg takes a more liberal approach. These guys are probably affected by the tough economy, so they are trying to make a buck. We learned fifteen years ago that that wasn’t the right approach.

If seeing these squeegy men back on the streets is part of the progress that Mayor Bloomberg has brought to the city, maybe we should think twice about giving him too much power within the New York Republican Party.

The media has been slow to criticize Mayor Bloomberg for apparently obvious reasons, but at some point "his record" will have to stand for itself.

Although not covered widely by the media, crime is on the rise, the schools - after so much contentious rhetoric - are not markedly better (and we're spending BILLIONS more every year) and the city's quality of life - both in terms of squeegy-men, graffitti and garbage on the streets - has taken a turn for the worst.

I'd ask all UE readers to post what they see as different in the city today compared to 8 years ago - for better or worse.

This is an important conversation to have now before the Mayor moves closer to running for the State's highest job...

NYC elephants can take pictures of what they see and submit them to UE for posting. We'll gladly post up things that should not be.
