While on vacation, I briefly heard about an issue involving West Bank settlements. The NYTimes had this story on the 11th.
Palestinian leaders meeting with Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. here on Wednesday harshly condemned Israel's decision, announced a day earlier, to add 1,600 housing units for Jews in East Jerusalem
This is one of those "smallest violin" moments and it is a shame that Vice President Biden doesn't play one when discussing this issue.
How many times over how many years have we heard of Palestinian-Israeli talks? And what percentage of all these times of talking and reneging and talking again have produced a sollution? 100%
If the Palestinians had excepted a two-state sollution back during those Clinton Years, or in this past decade with Sec Rice spending countless hours dealing with this regions biggest issue, we probably would not have seen Primar Minister Netanyahu order the addition of housing units.
It's a "cry me a river moment." Basically, had a deal been struck, this issue would not be here today. It's childish. Like a kid who refuses to eat his dinner after numerous attempts to feed him, then goes to bed crying that he's starving.
What's really disturbing is that the US is seen as a player here. Is there going to be a third state created in the region for the United States? If not, why should we really care other than supporting one of our allies if some hostile attack turns up.
