Health Department under Thomas Frieden and of course, Mayor Bloomberg, to teach abstinence and self-respect. They are too busy going after store owners who keep their doors open while the air conditioning is running or sending in the transfat police into Dunkin Donuts. Oh, and the city council wants to restrict the number of fast food restaurants in poorer neighborhoods. Note to city council: "fast food" means exactly that and sometimes it is all that people can afford. Not to mention the fact that the same chains offer salads. - alice Lemos

this is emblematic of what is wrong with a "nanny state"...

""We're giving away about 3.4 million condoms a month," said Sweeney..."

And after all that, we have 250 abortions a day??

Seeing statistics like the ones posted above side by side with handing out free condoms, which clearly no one is using, brings a pro-choice person like myself as close to recommending abstinence programs as i've ever been... - Jay Golub

Doesn't the baby have a choice? Every time you "choose" to have sex, especially unsafe sex, there is the possibility of a pregnancy resulting. Tell John Edwards that the expression "child bearing years" means exactly that. The Republican party is the party of life - the Democratic party is the Party of Death and Infanticide. New York State rejected - rejected funds for teaching abstinence under one Governor Spitzer and we can imagine why. His promiscuous life style goes with his disrespect for the value of life. - alice Lemos

there's nothing libertarian or conservative about being shocked that there's almost as many live births in NYC as there are abortions.

Again, this isn't saying i recant my pro-choice postion. But just as i am critical for pro-lifers at times for being unable to look honestly at facts or reality, it's important for me not to be a hypocrite.

Abortion should be a last resort, not something that is used as a form of contraception. If pro-choicers want to be taken seriously, especially in a party where there is strong pro-life support, they need to stand up and say something needs to be done to stop this troubling trend... - Jay Golub

Jay, you sound like a hardcore true blue conservative. What happened to the old Jay who firmly represented the libertarian wing of the republican party? :-) - Paladin

Abstinence programs may be the only solution for young people. Condoms are clearly available everywhere in NYC. To say they, as well as other methods of contraception, are not widely available is only something Planned Parenthood or the Bloomberg administration could come up with.

Sadly, the major media outlets of NYC chose NOT to cover this topic in any of thier pages this week. Of course they inconsistently covered the pointless program run by health czar Freiden to hand out free, NYC-brand condoms.

Although not normally a topic that gets my attention, numbers like those listed in the report should be getting not only the attention of the media, but the public at large. Someone's daughters are choosing to use abortion, in whatever form they are choosing, as their main form of contraception, opening themselves us to both unwanted pregnancies and STD's in the future.

Behavior like that is CLEARLY as unhealthy as it is immoral, and something should be done quickly to slow down this trend... - Jay Golub

Alternative to Condoms

" “Any time you see these high rates of abortion, it is a sign of high rates of women having unprotected sex,” he says."

I would change this statement to ...women having sex, not necessarily "unprotected" and even if so the article does not provide evidence of same.

The writer points out that condoms are provided free and at will especially in NYC, but the abortion rate remains much higher than the national average. This tells me the distribution of condom program isn't working.

The powers that be should entertain abstinence programs as an alternative since there is evidence of success in bringing abortion rates down.

As to better access to other contraceptives, there has been evidence that hormonal drugs have harmful risks, risks that are not always reported or not taken seriously.
