Say it ain't so, Jay! NY1 reports that Bronx GOP Chairman Jay Savino has endorsed Mayor Michael Bloomberg, assuring the mayor, who earlier abandoned the GOP in an abortive bid for the presidency, the GOP line in the upcoming mayoral election. (Funny how that "abortive" word keeps swirling around Bloomberg, isn't it?)
Did Savino sell the Bronx County endorsement for an undisclosed sum? If so, Jay, how about sharing some of that filthy lucre with the rest of us!

While it is interesting that the Chairman says he will now back the Mayor, where does his Executive Committee stand?
Isn't this supposed to be an open process for debate and not decided by the chairmen?
I've heard conflicting reports that Eaton adamantly opposed Bloomberg, but his Executive Committee voted for running the mayor on the GOP line.
I would like to hear what the true story is.
Do the papers have it right? Just Savino but not the Bronx Committee? Or are they speaking for the Committee when they say Savino?
Does anyone truly understand this process fully?
Let's be straight here.

I think Savino is making a big mistake in endorsing Bloomberg, especially after spending months criticizing the mayor and saying he would never endorse him.
Dan asks if Bloomberg might have done an end run around Savino, as the mayor did with Eaton. This might be possible. In 2005, there were reports that the Bronx GOP was going to back Tom Ognibene in a possible primary against Bloomberg. I don't have the whole story, but there reports that Bloomberg did an end run around then-interim chairman Vic Tosi and appealed directly to the district leaders and the Executive Committee. In the winter of 2005, the Bronx GOP then endorsed Bloomberg, who eventually knocked Ognibene off the ballot.
I agree that Savino should offer a detailed explanation of why he changed his mind.
