Scandal-Rocked N.Y. Governor Paterson to Resign?

There's no scandal yet, but the rumors are flying:

http://www.businessinsider.com/source-nyts-david-paterson-bombshell-to-break-tomorrow-governors-resignation-to-follow-2010-2

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2010/02/protecting-paterson.html#ixzz0ehX0JY5p

Will the New York Times expose New York Governor David Paterson as a womanizer far worse than Eliot Spitzer?  And if so, did the New York Times's marching orders come from the White House, occupied by the nation's first black President, to clear the decks for Andrew Cuomo's gubernatorial bid?

Is this why Andrew Cuomo is waiting until next month to announce whether he will run for governor as the nominee of the New York Democratic Party?  Does Cuomo have advance knowledge about the upcoming public spectacle crucifying David Paterson, New York's first black governor, orchestrated by the New York Times and the White House?

Resign or not run for re-election?
written by Behold a Pale Horse , February 08, 2010

Do you mean Paterson will actually resign, or will he simply not run for re-election?

If Paterson resigns, Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch, whom Paterson appointed, will become the new governor. The state's highest court ruled that Paterson could appoint a Lt. Gov. See http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes....vernor/?hp

QJ, you should hit "Enter" after copying and pasting hypertext links, so they show up in your posts and us readers don't have to copy and paste them in our browser. Or it some other technical issue?

If Paterson is just having an affair or several, is that really enough to cause him to resign? I can imagine his wife leaving, him getting ridiculed on late-night TV, and not running for a full-term.

But to force him to resign, it has to be something worse, something maybe illegal that could, under ordinary circumstances, get him impeached.

One blog is saying that Paterson will be gone by Wed. His spokesman denies that he's going to resign.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. But if nothing happens, someone out there may be caught having started some ugly rumors.

The Ravitch question.
written by evannyny , February 08, 2010

Would Ravitch really become Governor?

I think the latest ruling was that nothing in case law PREVENTED Paterson from naming his own Lieutenant Governor.

That said, I have a feeling that if Paterson were to step down, there would be a challenge of some kind AGAINST Ravitch becoming Governor. It would NOT be a smooth transition, to say the least.

What an absolute mess this is!

I am no fan of Paterson, but can't we just cut the guy a pass and allow him to be a lame duck, incompetent and ineffective governor for the next ten months? It's not like he's actually doing anything substantive. Must we really put ourselves through the embarrassing display of having our Governor chosen through litigation?

And is there more a "Scylla and Charybdis" choice in politics than potentially being governed by Pedro Espada or Richard Ravitch?

All I know is that whenever a Republican steps in it, the voters punish the entire party. Mother Teresa could be nominated by the GOP in the next election and the voters will not be satisfied until they have purged us at the polls (i.e. 1974, 1992, 2006, 200smilies/cool.gif. Why do I somehow feel like none of the taint of Spitzer and Paterson will translate to Cuomo? And why do I also have the sick feeling that Rick Lazio is entirely unprepared to make maximum political hay over whatever we learn about this mess over the next week?

I am so proud that I was one of the 29% of people in this state who voted for John Faso!

To Dan, I still have my old Commodore 64 hooked up. I still like the playing the old games.

Believe or not, I was still using it to type papers in my senior year of college (1993-1994).

No Times story yet.

The prospect of it being a "bombshell' looks less and less likely.

It will be interesting to see how these rumors started and spread so quickly.

Andrew Cuomo
written by GOPNYC , February 13, 2010

I guess a guy who could slime an opponent by running sound trucks in working-class Queens with the slogan "Vote for Cuomo, not the Homo!" could come up with another level of slime and slander.

I stay out of Democrat politics. But having seen the Cuomo Klan in action, I much prefer David Paterson.

And if the day came when I were to again be haunted by the sick-eyed, gravelly-voiced, "Spacime!", again, I think I would move out of the state -- I hate these people.

this slander against Paterson has Cuomo's and the State Democratic Party's name written all over it. That is the real scandal, not some Times Story. Honestly, when was the last time the NY Times broke ANY real news?!

Like I've said previously, Paterson isn't going anywhere and the only way to really get him out of office will be in handcuffs. If the Dem's and Cuomo want to go to that length, they will be committing political suicide and Lazio will fall gently into the governor's job.

The minority community will be easily dissuaded from voting, at worst, and convinced to vote for our guy at best.

For example, the African-American political community (for the first time) is seeing resources directed their way. The AEG situation is a perfect example of that. Yet, the Dem's (led by the protector of the establishment, Mr. Silver) and Cuomo will not allow that to stand. Instead, there will be an investigation done and the political leaders of the minority community will be dragged through the mud.

The establishment in the Democratic Party, along with Cuomo, are thugs. They will stop at nothing to get every ounce of power and funds.

Like I've said numerous times, this is going to get real ugly before it is over....

A Bloodbath
written by Quickjustice , February 14, 2010

Cuomo, the White House, and their friends in the media are maneuvering to try to force David Paterson out without a bloodbath in the Democratic primary. If Cuomo enters the race against Paterson, I think a bloodbath is inevitable in which black New York Democrats are betrayed by their own party, a betrayal orchestrated by the first black President.

Those wounds won't health quickly enough to give Cuomo an easy win in the general election. And President Obama's involvement can't camouflage Democrat-on-Democrat backstabbing. In such a maelstrom, Lazio might have a shot after all.
