It looks like the Bronx GOP might have two opportunities in the Bronx to compete for open seats, according to an article in the on-line Bronx Times-Reporter. It all depends if AG Mario Cuomo runs for Governor, as expected.
If Cuomo runs, State Senator Jeff Klein will run for Attorney General. He considered running for AG in 2006 but instead ran for re-election.
With Klein's seat, Assemblyman Michael Benedetto will run for the Senate seat. He nearly ousted Republican Senator John Calandra in 1978. Benedetto ran again for the seat in 2000 in as part of the Bronx Democratic machine's effort to derail Lorraine Coyle Koppell's bid to unseat Guy Velella, with whom the Democrats maintained a long non-aggression pact. Benedetto lost, but he was rewarded in 2004 with the Democratic nomination for Assembly (which Stephen Kaufman vacated as part of his disastrous Senate big). His district covers Throgs Neck, City Island, Co-op City, Pelham Bay, and Locust Point.
On UE in the past, there was talk of a serious challenge against Democratic Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera.
We'll see. 2010 is the year to do it.
