It seems there is no limit to the surreal nature of politics in Albany. In response to Gov. Patterson's State of the State yestarday calling for term limits on Albany elected officials, Sen. Malcolm Smith responded by stating that NY already has term limits.
"We obviously consider everything the governor puts forward, but I will remind you that in ten months we're all running for office again, so we have sort of a term-limit plan already, which is, every two years, we have to run for office. And I think the public would rather be the ones to tell us it's time to leave than for the 212 members to make that decision ...
I'm not arguing against it, it's what the facts are. We do have an election in ten months from now, every two years we run for office. That's a term-limit process that we subject ourselves to."

Term limits have some effect on the political environment, but one would need to change the entire electoral system to get any significant reform.
Smith isn't all that far off, except that the people - even when they vote for term limits - are more often than not ignored.
Term limits would not remove the bad in the political world and in Albany today, it would just force new bad-guys to come in every 8 to 12 years...
