With no primary challenge happening for two-term Mayor Mike Bloomberg, his campaign is already trying to appeal to the extreme Left of the voting public. Take a look at these three television advertisements. On guns...
On gay marriage...
NARAL's endorsement...
Now UE readers are certainly savvy enough to understand the strategy as far as the Mayor's campaign is concerned. Bloomberg is already running away from any resemblance of conservative or even moderate policies on the above issues because he knows his election will be won or lost for him by appealing to Democrats in NYC - most of whom are Center-Left at best on most issues, if not radical liberals.
But for all of those Republican candidates who are PROUDLY running side-by-side with Mayor Mike, in districts that are often not nearly as liberal as the city at-large, they should be careful how far they themselves dance over the liberal line with this liberal Mayor. Sure the money and support these candidates are getting from working with the 17th richest man in the world may be helpful, but at what cost to our collective longterm goals as Republicans?
The GOP can not grow if we continue to sell out every position that our rank-and-file supports. We MUST not cave in on the important issues of the day - the ones above as well as taxation, government spending, community security and education reform - just because a rich guy is throwing a few bucks around.
Either way, Urban Elephants should be concerned with the Leftward push of our "Republican" Mayoral candidate at this early stage of the campaign and the effect it is going to have, not only on this year's elections, but the future of NYC's Republican Party...

C'mon....we sold ourselves, our creaky platform and our core principles when the Republican organizations sold their endorsement for a measly check.
Now we have to sit back and endure watching OUR candidate for mayor trample over everything we stand for and believe. Before we know it, the city will be over run by gay married couples throwing rocks at heterosexual couples walking the street with their un-aborted children!
The Republican Party is once again the laughing stock of the city because the democrats can't lose! Mayor Bloomberg is democrat in Republican clothing and more to the left than Thompson.
We lost the state senate – no surprise
We lost the presidency – no surprise
We lost Congress – no surprise
Until we learn to stand for our core principles and beliefs and stop selling out and pandering to the left, we will lose that Ronald Reagan so proudly help us to build.
It is time to stand up and fight, one district leader position at a time, one council seat at a time and one executive, judicial and legislative body at a time

there's a reason for this. The calendar just turned over into July. The election is in November. The faceless Democratic opponent has been MIA and the average NYer has no idea who he is.
PUtting these endorsement videos out now gets an early response from the general public. if some of them stick, you recycle and reuse. If they don't, you toss them away. I'd say, at most, 1% of registered voters planning on voting this November will ever have seen these videos. So it's irrelevant.
It only shows how badly Thompson is doing at this point in the game.

Great Post, Bluecollar. I think you make the point very well. But it's more than just "selling out" that is killing the GOP - it's also the lack of willing, "principled" candidates to run under the Republican banner that is destroying the party. If our party members have no one to vote for, especially no one with Republican values, our members will lose interest in the political process and stop voting. In many areas, real Republicans feel ignored.

This is the main reason why having Bloomberg at the top of the ticket is NOT going to help the Republican party UNLESS he is willing to "loudly" stand up for a few of our issues.
What I find odd about the timing, Danny, is not that they are being widely viewed, but that they are being aired during the petitioning season, where political parties both come together and become divided over core issues, that our lead candidate would highlight the endorsement of three groups not commonly known to be part of the "core" of the Republican rank-and-file.
In the view of many, ads like these by the lead Republican candidate for 2009 will turn down the real Republican vote by November, making it ever harder for Republicans to win at the local level. It's important to note that as our national and state parties have moved to the Left on fiscal policy in overall stance and in candidate selection, Republicans have lost seats at every local level...

...funny as someone who will have spent about $300 million dollars over the last 8 years to "buy" three elections, eight different party lines, two key votes on Mayoral control and term limits. If Bloomberg hasn't "bought" these votes/elections, how did he get his way? Logic? doubtful, especially with term limits where even he thought over-turning that vote would be a "disgrace."
Sure, Mr. Mayor. You've won all these things fair and square...LOL!!!

Jay, I spoke to a district leader who is carrying a bloomberg petition and the funny thing is, Republicans are refusing to sign it.
The decision to put Bloomberg on the GOP line isn't working out with the petitioning process. I wonder if the mayor has even gotten the required number this year with all the registered Republicans simply refusing to sign petitions.

Disaffection with the mayor runs deep under the surface. I hear it everywhere I go. Bloomberg still must be counted the favorite, but as the economic crisis deepens, and Bloomberg lays off thousands more city workers in response, there will be a swell of popular opinion adverse to him.

I see the same thing here in Queens, Danny and QJ, yet the undercurrent is below the surface.
Many have this false fear that "if not him than who?" A draconian liberal character is then compared to this seemingly moderate leader of business and there is the justification for a clear majority of Republicans to vote for the Mayor this year.
In my view, a slight dent, as QJ is saying, against Bloomberg at this point in time - especially a slight against the right and center-right of NYC - could be a moral wound. Although he says he's an "independent," without the Republican line he wouldn't stand a chance of re-election. Bloomberg MUST carry the Right-leaning portion of the electorate this Fall if he wants to run NYC for another four years....
